Earliest ever ice-out declared on Lake Winnipesaukee July 9, 2018

MEREDITH, N.H. —Ice-out on Lake Winnipesaukee was declared Friday, the earliest date in recorded history.

Dave Emerson of Emerson Aviation made the declaration Friday, just over a month after declaring that the lake was finally iced over.

The last record was set on March 23, 2012.

Ice-out generally occurs the third week of April. Last year’s ice-out was on April 24.

The latest ice-out was in 1888, on May 12.

Ice-out was also declared Friday on Lake Sunapee, the earliest date recorded since at least 1869, when dates were first charted.

As of Friday, it has been one of the warmest and least snowy New Hampshire winters in recorded history.
